The business has helped more than 9 million homeowners reduce their energy and water consumption through its work with utilities. And it has given utilities combined control of more than 1 gigawatt of peak load.

Recently, the DOE awarded Honeywell a Smart Grid Investment Grant for an program that will help commercial and industrial facilities automatically implement load-shedding strategies. Honeywell also recently acquired Akuacom, which gives utilities and ISOs two-way communication with energy management systems at customer sites. The Akuacom technology is based on the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) protocol, a communication standard developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and selected by NIST and DOE for the smart grid.
